Meet Gramps:
There’s no one who wants to be adopted more than this old guy, Gramps. With everyone he meets, he seems to cry “Adopt me, please!” with his eyes.
He’s friendly to everyone. He loves people. He loves to be petted. And he’s fully capable of adoring other dogs as well.
The only catch with this old sweetheart is he takes medicine for his arthritis. He was found as a stray, and brought to a shelter in California, so we don’t know whether this angel has ever had a home.
The work of Best Friends is supported entirely through the donations of members, who help to ensure that animals who come into the care of Best Friends will never again be alone, hungry, sick, afraid, or in pain.

Best Friends is working with their members – and with humane groups all across the country – to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets.
The sanctuary at Angel Canyon, in the Golden Circle of southern Utah, is home, on any given day, to about 2,000 dogs, cats, and other animals from all over the country. Many of them need just a few weeks of special care before they’re ready to go to good new homes. Others, who are older or sicker, or who have suffered extra trauma, find a home and a haven here, and are given loving care for the rest of their lives.
Through the Best Friends Network, Best Friends reaches across the nation and around the world, helping local communities to rescue animals in distress and to set up spay/neuter, shelter, foster, and adoption programs in their own neighborhoods, cities and states.
And their rapid response team brings rescue and relief to people and pets in times of crisis and disaster.
The work of Best Friends is supported entirely through the donations of members, who help to ensure that animals who come into the care of Best Friends will never again be alone, hungry, sick, afraid, or in pain.

This is one interesting story that we came a cross on the internet. Maricopa County, in Arizona, was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who’d like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.
The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa Countyshelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78. The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.
Caring for a dog as they get older can become a challenge. Your once energetic pup is now an older dog that may need different nutrition, different amounts of exercise and help getting around. Here’s a great article all about the special needs of aging dogs from Janet Roper, the Animal communicator.
She discussed the changes she’s seen with her two dogs Teddy and Emmie. She discusses the following things that she had to do to accommodate her dogs as they age:
- Physical exercise
- Mental exercise
- Diet changes
Having an older pet can be great because they are much calmer, but make sure to check out her article for things to consider making your pet’s life more pleasant. Please share your comments below on how you try to make your aging pet more comfortable and accommodate their special needs.
FlexPet™ is an all-natural Joint Pain Supplement for dogs and cats. The primary component of FlexPet is CM8™, which relieves joint pain at its source, reduces inflammation and irritation of the joints and tissues. It has been helpful for many pets sufferering from joint pain and stiffness caused by aging, canine arthritis or feline arthritis.
We here at Flexcin continue to get involved with several animal shelters around the country in an effort to raise awareness and funds to support animals in distress. One of these shelters is Animal Ark, Minnesota’s Largest No Kill Animal Welfare Organization. Flexcin asked Animal Ark to give FlexPet a try and at first they were a bit skeptical, ike many are. Here’s what they had to say:
“When Animal Ark decided to evaluate FlexPet, we gave it to several pain-inflicted pets. We also asked several people we know if they would consider trying Flexcin. We figured that people were more likely to be able to tell us how they were feeling, and help us evaluate the efficacy of FlexPet.”
“We were very pleased with the results in both humans and nonhumans.”
“So far, nearly all of the people using Flexcin are reporting less to significantly less pain. Some are telling some dramatic stories of reduced pain, walking stairs normally, gardening, or simply walking without pain. Most all of the animals are showing signs of increased eagerness to exercise, climb stairs, and are generally acting as though they enjoy life more fully.”

We get lots of stories from our customers about the great changes they’ve seen since giving their pet FlexPet for joint pain and stiffness. Here’s a great one from Brooklyn the dog and his person Nita:
“Hi there! My 9 year old yellow lab, Brooklyn, had been an active dog for his first 7 years, hiking camping, swimming AND constant ball chasing. About 2 years ago he started slowing down and was diagnosed with arthritis in his legs hips and feet. This past year he had 2 ACL surgeries and we were afraid he would never be “The Player” (his nickname) again. He was totally depressed and couldn’t play with the other dogs at the dog parks or go for even very short walks. The vet put him on Deramaxx but we saw little change over the past 4 months and I really didn’t want him on the medicine because of the side effects and liver damage warnings.”
“So we tried FlexPet. After only 3 weeks, the change is incredible. Brooklyn acts like he is a puppy again, is alert, happy and constantly bringing his ball to us for a play session. I am totally sold on this product, it has worked for Brooklyn!”
“‘The Player’ is back with a vengeance! Play on.”

We regularly receive emails from customers who have seen great results from giving their pets. So we’ve decided that we’ll start sharing them here on our blog. We received the following feedback from Kelsey S. of Minnesota and we asked her to share her dog’s story and photo.
“It is going really well … she has been playing and running around way more than she did last year. I have seen a good improvement!!!”
Jojo’s Story:
When JoJo was one she was outside playing with one of her friends and while they were play biting at each others necks the other dog ended up getting his lower jaw wrapped up in JoJo’s chain choker. Both of them starting resisting to try to get away from each other, which only made the situation worse. JoJo started to get extremely nervous because when the other dog resisted the choker was strangling her and in one of her attempts to get away she pushed too hard on one of her back legs and ended up partially tearing a ligament in her knee. She was sore for about a month, but the pain seemed to go away till she started to become older. When she turned three I started her on the vitamin Glucosamine to try to help keep her joint cartilage. Then one day when I was looking at a No Kill Animal Shelter website in I saw that they started using Flexpet on some of the older animals and they starting seeing improvement in the way that the older dogs would play and run.
JoJo has now been on Flexpet for about four months and I have seen a huge improvement in the way that she runs, plays and retains her very puppy like energy. JoJo used to favor one leg all the time and on her really bad days she wouldn’t put any weight on her bad knee. Since she has been taking Flexpet her bad days have become less and less and her puppy days have returned!!
Thank you for improving the life of my pet,
Kelsey
P.S. Don’t ever trust chain chokers; they can cause serious injuries to your pet.

Hydrotherapy or water therapy is great way to provide a low impact exercise for your dog, with or without joint pain. For dogs with joint pain and arthritis, regular exercise like running or walking can be painful due to the amount of weight that your dog’s joints must support. Exercise in a pool, a lake or the ocean can be a great alternative since the buoyancy of the water takes much of the strain off the joints that is normally caused by their body weight. Swimming can help your pet with range of motion, strengthening, endurance and general health.
Exercise has been proven to help pets by reducing joint pain and stiffness while increasing flexibility, muscle strength, cardiac fitness and endurance. It can also help with weight reduction which can be a cause of some joint pain.
Talk to your veterinarian if you think your pet may benefit from this type of exercise. Hydro therapy may not be an option for dogs that have a fear of water. It is also not recommended for dogs with certain fractures and open wounds.
Humans aren’t the only ones who have to deal with Arthritis. Dogs and cats are both susceptible to it as they age. Arthritis is sometimes caused by infection of the joint, but most likely it’s just due to wear and tear throughout the years. Unfortunately, pets can’t explain their symptoms, which can make it hard to diagnose in the beginning. You may notice some changes in your pet’s behavior but be unsure of the cause. Always seek the advice of your Veterinarian in case these symptoms are being caused by a different disease or infection that requires immediate treatment.
So here’s some signs to watch for and how to manage your cat’s or dog’s Arthritis pain.
Warning Signs that your Pet could have Arthritis:
- Slowed movement
- Joints are swollen or red
- Stiffness and trouble getting up from a sitting/lying position
- Pain (Flinching from petting or handling)
- Some limping
- Inability to climb stairs
- Hard time getting in and out of the litter-box
How to Treat & Manage:
- Watch your pet’s weight - Extra weight produces strain on joints, just like it does in humans. By managing your pet’s diet and lower its weight you can help the amount of stress on the joints. It can also help with combating other diseases like heart disease or diabetes.
- Massage - Massage helps increase blood flow in the muscles and that can be good for sore joints.
- Warmth and Comfort - Cold temperatures and dampness can intensify arthritis pain. Make sure your cat or dog has a warm, soft bed and stays inside while it rains or snows.
- Medicine - See your vet in case the joint pain is due to infection, in that case they may prescribe steroids or antibiotics. Caution aspirin and acetimetaphin can be dangerous for cats and some dogs with stomach problems, so don’t self-prescribe.
- Supplements - Natural supplements are a good option for cats or dogs with sensitive stomachs or who don’t react well to harsh medications.
- Exercise - You may assume that exercise will further strain the joints but it can actually help build muscles and strengthen the areas around the joint, therefore lessening the pain. It can be very challenging to get a cat exercise if they are in pain. Try a walk on a leash, even for a cat, introduce a new toy and play with your dog or cat.
Again, always seek the advice of your Veterinarian in case these symptoms are being caused by a different disease or infection that requires immediate treatment.
A couple of days ago I signed up for Twitter. I’ve heard it’s a cool place to find other dogs to play with. So I got on there and started barking. I found a couple other dogs, cats, a ferret, a rabbit and even a horse. Then it happened I stumbled on #WoofWednesday and met tons of new friends. I was so excited my tail was wagging for hours.
I noticed something strange though, lots of these animals had red noses, kinda like rudolf the red nosed reindeer. I thought it was very strange and then became oddly jealous. “I want a red nose.” was soon all I could think of. Just like when I loose my squeaky toy under the couch, it becomes an obsession and no one can stop me from achieving my goal.
My new friend, EmmytheCat explained that the noses were for Comic relief. Then another friend Duke Richard, told me where to get the red nose his blog. Here’s his pic. He got a crown too!
Check me out with my red nose!
